Pay for it either once or once again. How often over the years have well-meaning people brought once fine pieces of furniture into the shop and sadly pointed out a failed repair. "My retired Uncle Harry tried his best!".

A second repair is usually a bit more costly as the improper repair must first be undone. At times it is harder to repair since the fibers of the wood no longer match. Do it once and do it right must be the only acceptable goal.

Almost accomplished builders of fine furniture started out, and I am no exception, by getting their feet wet with a beginning career in antique furniture repair and restoration. Don't think in terms of drudgery; instead think in terms of study, learning and admiration. In the effort to "do it the right way" one is introduced to many wonderful old pieces in books, at home and museums. Practice, Practice, Practice...

While it is not always possible to pinpoint a root problem or an exact repair price, some margins of time must be established between the shop and the valued customer. Keep in mind not all old pieces have a high market value. Having said that, time and again, I have found that personal attachment trumps all. "Great Grandmothers rocker must always be in our family".

The enjoyable end result for me is often bringing back badly damaged and deteriorated pieces, and happily retuning them to a family home. At times the result of the repair can bring the piece from its current marginal value, to a very high market value. To a value of many thousands…

Is there always an exact direction or answer? Probably not, but start by asking, “is this a piece I would really like to keep?” And why not think of it as fun to bring the piece to my shop and find some satisfactory solution together.
